Charlotte, NC: Kissing Rock Picnic
The "Kissing Rock" is the longest-lived tale at JMU. When the Quad was graded in the early 1920s for the construction of Alumnae Hall, an enormous limestone rock was unearthed. The cost of removing the huge stone would have been prohibitive so the top part of the stone was left untouched and protruding from the ground. In the institution's early years, the female students were not allowed to be seen in the company of young men without a dorm mother present. So they would have the time and privacy to part for the evening, a couple would hide behind the big rock and kiss goodnight. Thus, "Kissing Rock" was born. The legend expanded to include the prediction that the person you kiss at Kissing Rock will be the person you marry. There are no statistics on the prediction's accuracy, or lack thereof but it's a fun thought that we will share among many generations to come. Here in Charlotte we've found our own JMU "Kissing Rock" and what better way to celebrate back to school than with a picnic!
The Charlotte Chapter invites you to head over to Freedom Park for a fun-filled, family-friendly event on Sunday, August 17. There is no cost to attend, we just ask that you bring one side dish to share with the group. The Chapter will be providing drinks and BBQ. Please be sure to register so we have an accurate headcount!
