On behalf of the James Madison Center, and JMU Debate we are pleased and excited to invite you to compete for the Madison Cup at the 14th annual “James Madison Commemorative Debate and Citizens Forum”
on Thursday, April 17th, 2014.
2014 Topic: This house believes that warrantless electronic surveillance by the U.S. Government has done more harm than good.
8am: Pick up at Residence Inn or Comfort Inn (you may also park at the Grace Street Parking Deck)
8-9am: Registration and Announcements
9:30am: Preliminary debate round 1
11am: Preliminary debate round 2
2pm: Preliminary debate round 3 (announcement of the final round participants)
6pm: Final round (followed by presentation of the Madison Cup)
For 2014, there will be 3 preliminary rounds of debate and one final round. This is a public debate. The JMU Debate Team is looking for alumni to judge each preliminary debate and the final debate. We will also have former Directors of Debate, John Morello, Roger Soenksen and Pete Bsumek in attendance. If you are interested in helping to judge, please complete the information below. Be sure to let us know if you will need a lunch.
After the final round debate, there is an alumni reception at Beyond Restaurant in Downtown Harrisonburg. There is no fee to attend, but register below so we can get an accurate headcount.

Mark Waugh Memorial Fund:
The Waugh Memorial Fund was establish to remember former JMU Debater Mark Waugh (’12) who was tragically killed in the Fall of 2013. Mark began debate at JMU as a novice, won novice nationals and was a two time qualifier for the National Debate Tournament. This fund is designated to support novice debate at JMU.

A block of rooms at two area hotels has been reserved for the Madison Cup. Both rates will be available until March 15.
